The Eight Wisdoms of Kung Fu

Students at Golden Lion Academy are also taught ‘The Eight Wisdoms of Kung Fu’ and these are listed on a banner as a reminder during classes. These include:

  • Respect - be polite, show consideration to others and be respectful of teachers, students, people and members of other martial arts clubs.

  • Loyalty - show faithfulness to those around, stay constructive when dealing with difficult issues and treat Golden Lion members as brothers and sisters.

  • Tolerance - permit others to be different from you, with their own beliefs and opinions. Keep an open mind. This is not about ‘putting up with people’ but appreciating differences.

  • Perseverance - be persistent and don’t give up. In the end this brings results. As the tablet by the club altar reads, "100 perseverances leads to success"’. If something is hard, constant practice will bring your reward.

  • Patience - recognise that it takes time to learn anything worth learning. It is important to build a firm foundation before moving to the next skill.

  • Dignity - conduct oneself with dignity in order to earn the respect of others and feel a sense of self-respect.

  • Humility - be humble. Recognise that however much we know, there is still much more that can be learned. In other words, retain a ‘beginners mind’.

  • Honour – show personal integrity. Stay by your moral principles and live by example. Another aspect is holding others in high regard and thus treating others as you would have them treat you.
