Seven Tips from kung fu Chinese martial arts weaponry training are offered below to help you improve. These tips can be applied to most weapons, whether it is a long weapon such as the spear, staff or bo, or whether it is a short weapon such as the twin sticks or broadsword. 1. Focus on your weapon This will train your eyes to follow the movement of the weapon ensuring that defensive and offensive moves are performed correctly. 2. Keep wrists flexible, elbows and shoulders relaxed The weapon is held in the hand so a stiff arm is not beneficial. Keep the wrist, elbows and shoulders relaxed will benefit in gaining speed and power. 3. Co-ordinate the weapon with your body The weapon should move with your body. This will improve rhythm, fluency and smooth transition between movements. 4. Be Precise with the movements Accuracy and clarity of movements adds to the overall quality of the performance. 5. Low and Strong footwork Keep the stances low and work on your footwork to build a strong foundation. This will assist in stability, balance and control. 6. Show power in your movements Power is important, but not at the expense of spirit in your action. Power, spirit and meaning to the moves must be present in all your actions. 7. Always finish as strong as you started This demonstrates your fitness, discipline, will power and determination. It contributes towards achieving an excellent performance.
