Chinese Kung Fu Martial Arts Master Workshops May 2008

Kung Fu Martial Arts Dim Mak self defence technique

During May 2008 the Golden Lion Kung Fu (KF) Academy offered four specialised workshops. Tai Chi, KF, Weaponry and Dim Mak training were all available. The Tai Chi workshop was led by Sigung Charles Tsui-Po and revealed the effective self defence applications of this graceful art. Sigung Richard Tsui-Po taught the black tiger routine, a powerful and high speed form that does not require a large space to practise. Sifu Steeve Kiat conducted the northern broadsword covering the 32 movements, an elegant and powerful routine.

I was privileged to attend the Dim Mak pressure points workshop led by Sifu Craig Rayner. This workshop helped me expand my knowledge of this intriguing art. Through my time at the academy and my study of Dai Sifu Pier Tsui-Po’s excellent books on Dim Mak, I have picked up some knowledge of this captivating art. The workshop built on this and taught effective techniques to strike pressure points and demonstrated the location of these points.

The concepts of Chi and Meridians were introduced to the group to help establish how pressure points work, and also shared important concepts used not only in martial art but also Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The workshop has helped me improve my focus on the targets of my strikes during my KF sparring and applications. It has also reinforced the importance of focusing my eyes on my attacking hand or weapon during routine training. Accuracy is of great importance when striking Dim Mak pressure points and focus is crucial to achieving this accuracy.

I would like to thank Sifu Craig and Si Hing Michael Pringle for running the Dim Mak workshop and to the other masters for offering students of the academy the opportunity to participate in theses valuable training.

(Thanks to Brett Munckton for this contribution)
