Kung Fu Second Degree Black Belt Grading
Kung Fu Black Belt Gradings are not something that comes around on a regular basis. When it was made known that two of Rowville’s most respected and admired were to attempt their second degree black belt, I knew this was something that I could not pass up. Si Hing Kris Eberius and Si Hing Julius Ting are two of the most dedicated and hard working students that I know. Usually I only see them instructing classes so this was a great time to see them perform at their best. Tuesday July 5th 2011 was a very cold night, with the mercury dipping down into the single figures. Sitting on the side - even wearing a jacket - I found myself shivering a little by the end of the hour-and-a-half endurance session. But not these guys; both pushed through the cold, pain, and fatigue barriers highlighting the qualities and discipline demanded to achieve excellence at the Golden Lion Academy. Watching the essential movements demonstrated during the tiger and eagle claw seizing techniques for blocks, leopard fist and dragon palm striking methods for punches, as well as straight, circular and jumping kicking patterns; gave me plenty of food for thought for my own training. Having only demonstrated my own technique while sitting on a still horse stance; it was enlightening to see combinations put together while moving down the floor. Following this, the demonstration of four forms; two bare-hands - southern fist and three ancestors - and two weapons - advanced southern cudgel and broadsword - were all awe inspiring. Each routine demonstrated speed, strength, and precision acquired through years of hard work and determination. For students of lower belts, applications of self defence are done with bare hands. Seeing weapon based applications demonstrated with a mixture of cudgel and broadsword techniques put many individual moves and strikes into prospective for myself, having never attempted, let alone seen such a display. Though tired, struck down by cold & flu, and cramping; both students demonstrated superior stamina holding a 2 minute long 90 degree horse stance at the end of their endeavour. Seeing them both awarded their certificates of success brought much inspiration for those who came to watch, and I would like to take this opportunity to once again congratulate them both on a stellar effort in achieving their second degree black belt.
